Laksha industry is an industry that is about 400 years old. In the past, this industry was widespread in Asia as well as Europe. But today, this industry is found only in a few countries like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Maldives and China. Laksha is a Sanskrit word. Actually Laksha industry means silver industry by name. Laksha is an art of painting . It is in the form of a carving. Laksha art which is made by scraping a secretion released by the laksha insect or leaves on plants, is melted by the heat of burning charcoal and mixed with colors, and the colored laksha is used to paint wooden items in a carved manner. It differs from other painting techniques due to the raw materials used, painting technique, durability, finish, density of the painting, the art being associated with a caste and being a traditional art dating back to the earliest written history of Sri Lanka. It has two main parts namely nail work and lathe work. Nail work was a technique unique to Sri Lanka and lathe work can be found in other countries as well.
